RESEARCH GUIDE

Peptide storage and stability

How research peptides are stored in the lab affects how well they keep over time. This guide covers widely used general handling practices for lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptides. Always follow any storage information supplied with a specific product and your laboratory's own procedures.

1. Temperature

Lyophilized peptides are generally more stable than peptides in solution. Common laboratory practice is to keep sealed vials cold — refrigerated for short periods and frozen (around −20 °C or colder) for longer storage. Before opening a cold vial, let it reach room temperature so moisture does not condense inside.

2. Light

Some amino acids are sensitive to light. Keeping vials in their packaging or in a dark container limits exposure.

3. Moisture and air

Freeze-dried material readily absorbs moisture. Keep vials sealed until needed, reseal promptly, and store them in a dry place. Residues such as cysteine, methionine and tryptophan are more prone to oxidation when exposed to air.

4. Freeze-thaw cycles

Repeated freezing and thawing, especially of solutions, can degrade peptides. Labs often divide material into single-use portions so each portion is thawed only once.

5. Record keeping

Label each vial with the compound, lot number, date received and date opened. Matching the lot number to its Certificate of Analysis keeps documentation traceable.

Checklist

  • Store sealed vials cold, frozen for long-term storage
  • Warm to room temperature before opening
  • Protect from light and moisture
  • Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles
  • Record lot numbers and dates
